Boston Central Artery / Third Harbor Tunnel

Owner: Massachusetts Highway Department

185 Kneeland Street

Boston, MA 02111

Total Project Cost: $12.2 B

The Central Artery / Third Harbor Tunnel (CA/T) project in Boston, Massachusetts is the largest, most complex and technologically challenging highway project ever attempted in American history. The project will dramatically reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility in one of America’s oldest and most congested major cities, improve the environment, and lay the groundwork for continued economic growth for millions of New Englanders.

Dr. Gerald Iglesia, G2D principal, was directly involved during the geotechnical investigation phase of the CA/T project in the early nineties. Dr. Iglesia performed in situ testing with field vane (for clayey soils) and pressuremeter (for soil and rock) equipment for the portion of the CA/T project from Kneeland Street to Causeway Street. In helping prepare geotechnical data and engineering reports for the project, he analyzed data from field and laboratory tests and assembled a calculations package addressing various geotechnical issues ranging from the determination of soil/rock properties to estimating ground movements due to the proposed construction. Dr. Iglesia also supervised a full-scale Tension Element Testing Program that demonstrated the feasibility of using tiedown anchors for resisting anticipated hydrostatic uplift forces on the planned ventilation buildings.
